I’m confused. I bought ‘doomsday book’ a few yrs ago; discovered it was part of an unfinished trilogy so decided to wait and not read it. i then bought ‘To say nothing of the dog’ and again waited. the inside back cover strongly implied the final part was ‘all clear’. now it seems ‘all clear’ is the second part to ‘blackout’. could someone please explain what belongs to what and if there is then still a third book to come or…???

    much appreciated

    Jeff

    Jeff,

There never was a planned Trilogy, just a series of stories that tied together loosely. I’m actually planning to put up a guide of sorts to the time travel stories.

First, there is the short story Fire Watch in 1982 (available in the short story collection of the same name). It is set during the blitz and is referenced during All Clear.

Next was the novel Doomsday Book in 1992.

After that was To Say Nothing of the Dog in 1998.

Finally, there is Blackout and All Clear, which were orignally to be one novel, but grew to be released in two volumes, released this year (2010).

So, it is not a formal trilogy, but combing Blackout and All Clear into one novel, it does make a loose trilogy. The earlier ones can be read without having read the others, though. At this point, if there is going to be anything else it in this universe, it will not be anytime soon.

I’ve been a big Connie Willis fan for years, but there were several aspects of Blackout/All Clear that I found confusing and dissatisfying. First, why does Mike think he has to fake his death to help Polly and Merope get out? It was not explained, and I can’t think of a good reason. (Maybe I’m just thick.) Second, where and when did Stephen Lang meet Polly prior to 1944? He’s about to tell her when he’s interrupted, and the topic is never revisited, even though enough time is spent on it to make it seem important. Third, who is the unnamed character who appears in the tube station at the end of Blackout? Colin? But I thought he couldn’t get through to that time. Any help clearing up these points would be most welcome.

I’m curious about the answer to question 2 as well. However, I think that the answer to the third question is in All Clear in the story that Mr. Dunworthy tells Polly at the pub. It’s page 402 in my book. And, it took me a rereading Blackout to get it.
