The Original B5 FAQL

So, back in the ancient days of 1992, the main online public discussion forum was USENET.  While the majority of jms’ interaction with fans took place on GEnie, I tried to spread the word about Babylon 5 via cross posting the Babylon 5 Frequently Asked Questions List to rec.arts.sf.tv, rec.arts.tv, and rec.arts.startrek.  Thanks to Google archiving most of USENET, we can look back at those days.  This link takes you to one of my earliest postings of the B5 FAQ, including responses to it from Steven Grimm as well as a Star Trek fan asking why it was being posted in a Star Trek group.

At the time, access to Usenet was fairly limited to the general public, mainly via college systems and government sites.  There were some interfaces via bbses as well.  I accessed it via a internet service called Portal (which is why my emails then are from a cup.portal.com address, which is also how Peter David primarily accessed the internet back then).

We also made use of ftp sites to store and archive files and images (very low-res by today’s standards) including the ftp.hyperion.com archive.  As the web began to evolve, this lead to The Lurker’s Guide to Babylon 5, put together by Steven Grimm.  We’ should probably get the Wikipedia page corrected for how things actually evolved, but more than likely the Wikipedia gods won’t acknowledge us as authoritative enough….
